Science
Course Sequence: Peoria Unified School District does not determine the course sequence for science core courses. Students can choose courses in a sequence that best suits their needs and interests. Students will take courses from a variety of science disciplines, as indicated in the chart below, as scientifically literate individuals, ready for college and career success. Several campuses offer unique programming including courses that can meet a lab course requirement for science, including Ironwood (IB), Peoria (Agriscience), and the MET Academy. Students interested in those programs must consult with their counselor to ensure graduation requirements are met. Graduation Requirement: Peoria Unified School District, in compliance with Arizona Revised Statute, requires three sciences courses for graduation. Through the three courses, students will demonstrate proficiency in the twenty-eight essential standards as required in the 2018 Arizona Science Standards. Students should take a minimum of 3 science courses that expose them to the 28 essential standards, across the three disciplines: Earth Science, Physical Sciences, and Life Science. Students will earn “three credits of science in preparation for proficiency at the high school level on the statewide science assessment” (State Board Rule R7-2-302) administered in the spring of 11th grade. Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR): In addition, this expectation is consistent with Arizona Board of Regents admission (for ASU, UofA, NAU), which also requires that students complete three laboratory science courses. “By completing at least 1 credit in each of 3 different laboratory sciences selected from the following: chemistry, physics, earth science, or biology. A laboratory-based integrated science course may be allowed to substitute for 1 of the 3 required courses. It is strongly recommended that students take 3 years of different laboratory science subjects before taking an advanced/honors course in the same subject” (ABOR Policy 2-121). NCAA: In general, Peoria’s graduation requirements will meet NCAA requirements for lab sciences. However, because NCAA requirements vary slightly by division, students must consult with their counselor to ensure admission expectations are met.
